Preliminary Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

Denotation:

The magazine cover shows a man holding a basketball and looking in a straight line at the camera. The camera shot is of the man is medium long shot because it’s showing his head, arms and wrist. The background of the magazine is white so the picture of the man stands out brightly mainly because his wearing a bright blue top as well. The picture of the man holding the basket ball takes up the whole magazine this makes it catch the reader’s eyes. On top of the man the title College Basketball the Masthead which is big and black on a white background so this is also good because it stands out from the rest of the text. Also theirs a barcode on the bottom right.

Composition: The man is posed in a happily way while representing the basketball as well so this could mean that if you play basketball you could be happy like him.

Costume: his clothing is basic their not any think really special just a basketball polo top which is branded by Nike and the basketball team Logo.

NVC: His Non verbal communication shows that his really happy with his mouth open and his white teething showing and his looking directly at the camera.

Lighting: The lighting is high key because it’s bright.

Setting: This setting is not really shown properly but I guess it could have been set in a basketball court mainly because it’s about basketball.

Masthead: the magazine title is called ‘College Basketball’ this is very eye catching because it’s big black and out with a white out line so this makes it stand out from the rest. Also there is another title on the same page that says ‘ The Cult of Calipari’ this also grabs the readers eyes because it’s the biggest font on the page with a White colour font and a black out line.

Main Image: the main imagine on the magazine is a man holding a basketball, so this is trying to pay that without us reading any of the title or text we should know that it’s going to be about basketball straight away. Also the man is looking straight at you so you’ll be making direct eye contact with the man.

Cover-Lines: The cover lines of the magazine are perfect because the top title is on top on the man’s heading so it’s not disturbing the image. Also the main cover line of this current magazine is the sub heading that quotes ‘The cult of Calipari’ I say this because its big and it goes over the man’s blue t-shirt so this makes the text really stand out from the rest.

Induction: Movie poster Textual Analysis

Indiana Jones

In this assignment the denotation of the image shows a man holding a weapon in a cave surrounded by dark and fire. Also the connotation shows that the man looks adventurist and it looks like theirs going to be lots of action involved. The costume his wearing looks very dirty with his shirt ripped and his comebacks trousers on. The props he was holding were a rope and a gun which straight away tells me that there’s going to be fighting and shooting involved in the film. The setting shows that it was based in a dark cave. The lighting is really low-key because it has dark colours and fire effects which show there’s going to be death involved. On the other hand his facial expression looks like his not taking no sense from anyone and his body language also shows that he is ready to fight any battle that’s coming against him. The anchorage of this image shows that the film could be an adventurist film and it also shows that there’s going to be lots of danger involved. Lastly the font used to write ‘Indiana Jones’ is kind of like comic book style so this film could have a little bit of comedy involved just like comic books.

Induction: Re-Creation of a Movie Magazine Front Cover

This was my first task for AS media to use Photo shop to redesign a front cover of the 'Avatar' magazine. This task was a bit difficult because I have not used Photo shop before so I tried my best, then I started to get the hang of it. I struggled on a particular bit where I had to send the Text to the back of the photo and I never knew how to do this. The easy part was when I had to start entering the text and placing them where they go. The things which I could have improved was the Title by sending it to the back also by placing the texts in the right area so it looks more professional. Also I should have added an image at the bottom right of a Bar code to make it look the same as the original magazine cover.
